The Kauai Museum Comments Off

When you think of Hawaii, your mind instantly wanders to beautiful waterfalls and clear, blue water. But Hawaii is also home to a variety of culturally rich museums, such as the Kauai Museum on the island of Kauai.Located on Rice St., in the town of Lihue, the Museum’s exhibits tell the history of the island. One such exhibit is the Story of Kauai, which is a two floor showcase in the Rice building. A focus on the origins of Kauai, including its natural history and its people, can be found on the first floor. Whereas the second floor contains information on the traders and sugar plantations, with exhibits leading all the way up to World War II.The Juliet Rice Wichman Heritage exhibit, in the Wilcox building, takes a more artistic and decorative direction. Visitors can admire furniture from the monarchy period, artifacts of old monarchs and Kauai alii, as well as portraits of Albert Spencer and Emma Mahelona Wilcox (individuals the building was named after). Finally there’s an Oriental Art Gallery, also in the Wilcox Building, which exhibits all forms of Asian art.Alongside its exhibits, the Museum hosts a variety of activities. On May 1st, or the Saturday closest to it, Kauai Museum throws its May Day Lei contest. Guests can admire the displays from local lei makers, and even try making some of their own. For Christmas visitors, the Christmas Craft Fair and Lights on Rice parade brings local craftsmen and craftswomen to the museum, allowing for Christmas shopping up until 6. The crafts-fair is followed by a parade to the Christmas lighting at the Historic County building.Admission is 10 for the general public, while seniors pay 8 and children 2. For more ticket prices, or more information on upcoming exhibits, visit the Museum’s website.
