When visiting or moving to the Big Island of Hawaii, seeing the sights and attempting to absorb everything that the islands have to offer, one of the first state parks to visit is Akaka Falls State Park. Located on the northeastern side of Hawaii Island, just west of the town of Honomu on the Hawaii Belt Road not far north of Hilo, the park covers just over 65 acres of land. Besides the tropical forest and wildlife, the main feature of the park is the 422-foot Aka Falls.Want more? The loop trail follows through about ten minutes of tropical forest filled with jungle sounds, birds, flowers, occasional small waterfalls and lovely, native trees.

The park is open every day, and visitors are charged 5.00 per car or 1 per pedestrian, but state residents enter Akaka Falls free. The park has picnic tables and restrooms for guests. Getting to the park early can help visitors beat the tour busses and the masses of park guests. A gift shop is located right on the road leading to the park.
